The 21st Annual Meeting of the UK and Republic of Ireland Section of SIAM was hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Strathclyde, on Thursday, 12th of January 2017. The meeting attracted more than 70 attendees and we were delighted to accommodate 22 poster presentations. Travel funding was offered to postgraduate students who presented posters, and this seems to have encouraged take-up.
Following the format of the previous year’s 20th Anniversary meeting in Cambridge, our schedule combined keynote speakers Nick Higham (University of Manchester), Jeremy Morley (Ordnance Survey), Sarah Waters (University of Oxford), and early career speakers Marta M. Betcke (University College London), Lyuba Chumakova (University of Edinburgh), Angela Mihai (Cardiff University).
We were especially pleased to maintain the long-standing tradition of having a contribution from an incumbent SIAM President; in this case the newly-appointed Nick Higham.
A team of senior researchers were tasked with evaluating the student posters, and prizes were awarded as follows:
First prize: Scott Bagwell, University of Swansea
Second prize: Alberto Paganini, University of Oxford
Honourable mention: Francisco de Melo Virissimo, University of Bath (hon)
Honourable mention: Alex Safar, University of Cardiff (hon)
Honourable mention: Josh Walton, University of Strathclyde (hon)
Honourable mention: Weijian Zhang, The University of Manchester (hon)

The section’s secretary/treasurer Stefan Güttel led a short business meeting and informed attendees that the 2018 Annual Meeting will be hosted by the University of Southampton, with local organisation coordinated by Alain Zemkoho.
The day was followed by an informal dinner in a local restaurant. Further information about the day, including abstracts of the talks and posters, as well as some of the posters, can be found at http://maths.manchester.ac.uk/siam-ukie/annual2017/.
We are grateful to all those who contributed to the success of this event. Special thanks go to the officers from Strathclyde’s SIAM student chapter, Andrew Croudace, Craig Gilmour and Joseph Cousins, and faculty advisor Jen Pestana, for help with local arrangements. We also thank the IMA for sponsoring one of the invited talks.
