Manchester SIAM Student Chapter Conference 2016

On the 4th of May the University of Manchester Student Chapter of SIAM hosted our 6th Annual Conference.

Our three plenary speakers were Dr Angela Mihai (Cardiff University), Dr Edvin Hopkins (Numerical Algorithms Group Ltd) and Dr Timo Betcke (University College London). Dr Mihai gave our opening talk, in which she talked about how elastic bodies deform under stress, with examples drawn from animals’ cell structures in nature. Dr Hopkins, who had previously worked as a postdoc at the University of Manchester, returned to talk about some of the difficulties faced while implementing numerical algorithms computationally. The third and final plenary talk, given by Dr Betcke discussed solving partial differential equations using boundary integral equations.

In addition to the three plenary talks there were also six talks given by students of the University of Manchester, as well as a poster session. The Numerical Algorithms Group kindly sponsored a prize for the best student talk, and for the best student poster. The prize for best talk went to Georgia Lynott who talked about her work on acoustic shielding for underwater sonar arrays. The prize for best poster was won by Pranjal for his poster on linear system solvers for stochastic finite element modelling problems.
