Nominations are now open to stand for Secretary/Treasurer of the SIAM UKIE Section in the upcoming elections, which will take place in February/March 2022.

Subject: Community detection is an essential tool in the analysis of complex networks, with diverse applications such as identifying genes related to cancer, uncovering terror cells on Twitter, and understanding links between politicians.

For the simplest case of networks, there has been an abundant body of research, and many effective algorithms have been designed. But for more complex networks, the field is much more sparsely populated, due to the lack of consensus surrounding the definition of a community.

The main focus of this PhD will be on unifying the problem of community detection in directed networks. It will build on a recent framework based on higher-order representations of networks, which has had some success. It will also build on existing work by the supervisors to produce methods tailored to the needs of the intelligence community.

The project will blend cutting edge tools for mathematical analysis with algorithm development and extensive investigation of applications.

Eligibility:Applicants should have a first class or good 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (mathematics, computer science, engineering-related disciplines, etc. with background in applied mathematics and programming). Highly motivated candidates from non-mathematical backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The studentship covers full tuition fees and a tax-free stipend for 4 years starting on the 1st of October, with an attractive Research Training Support Grant to facilitate travel to appropriate conferences. To be eligible for a full award a student must have no restrictions on how long they can stay in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the studentship.

Sheffield SIAM-IMA conference

The newly-formed joint SIAM-IMA Student Chapter at the University of Sheffield cordially invites you to our first event! We are organizing an online two-day conference (via Zoom) for early-career researchers (including postdocs, postgraduate and undergraduate students). Please consider contributing a short presentation (20′, 10′ or 5′ – for more information and the registration form we direct you to our website) and/or a poster. Deadline for submissions for abstracts and posters is the 16th of July, 5pm, and the deadline for registration is the 20th of July. Those selected to give a presentation will be notified shortly after the deadline.
There will be prizes for the posters both in the undergraduate and in the postgraduate category.
We will have four keynote speakers, three academics and a researcher working in industry (again, more information can be found on the conference flyer and our website). In addition to mathematical presentations, our event will include social activities, as well as a presentation (with a Q&A) about working in industry, challenges and opportunities for mathematicians.

Postdoc position in data science at the University of Edinburgh

We welcome applications to fill a postdoctoral position on statistical data processing in assisted living technologies from candidates with
scientific computing, applied mathematics or computational statistics background. The post entails primarily independent research work but also some collaboration with other researchers from the NewTechnologies of Care Centre (https://www.ed.ac.uk/usher/advanced-care-research-centre). You will contribute to the research, analysis and development of randomised sketching algorithms
for streaming sensor data in the context of online model learning. The goal of the project is to identify structure in streaming data from
various sensors and capture it in a “data sketch”, a low-dimensional structure that preserves the main features of the original data with
respect to a given computational task.
Deadline: 31st of May.
The initial appointment is for 18 months extension subject to performance.

IR Tools Training Event in June 2021

IR Tools is a MATLAB Package of Iterative Regularization Methods and Test Problems for Linear Inverse Problems, which was first released in Summer 2018.
The University of Bath is hosting a virtual IR Tools training event, aimed at postgraduate students and researchers who would like to learn more about IR Tools and its usage, as well as understand the theory underlying linear inverse problem solvers and get some hands-on experiences in dealing with large-scale discrete inverse problems. Here are a few details:

  • Dates and Times: the event will run from Wednesday 02/06/2021 to Friday 04/06/2021, from 1PM to 4:30PM BST.
  • Location: on zoom (link to be provided to participants in due time).

New Irish Numerical Analysis Forum seminar series

The Irish Numerical Analysis Forum (INAF) is a new initiative where experts from various countries give talks on their subject areas that are suitable for a **general numerical analysis audience** — not just those who already have some familiarity with the topic of the talk.

The series starts on 21-Jan-2021; more info, including a list of the first 6 speakers and instructions for registering your name and email address, are given at the INAF website at https://staff.ul.ie/natalia/inaf

The talks will be streamed online via zoom and are free to view; one must however register in advance with INAF to gain access to them. We will usually have one talk every two weeks, but the talk timetable may vary from this. A registration puts you on our mailing list for receiving zoom links for all talks.

SIAM-UKIE Annual e-Meeting 2021: Registration OPEN

The SIAM-UKIE Annual e-Meeting 2021 will take place on zoom on Friday the 8th of January 2021, 2PM-3:30PM.

Title: Branching processes as models of cascade dynamics on networks

Presenter: Prof James Gleeson, University of Limerick, Ireland

Abstract: Network models may be applied to describe many complex systems, and in the era of online social networks the study of dynamics on networks is an important branch of computational social science.  Cascade dynamics can occur when the state of a node is affected by the states of its neighbours in the network, for example when a Twitter user is inspired to retweet a message that she received from a user she follows, with one event (the retweet) potentially causing further events (retweets by followers of followers) in a chain reaction. In this talk I will review some mathematical models that can help us understand how social contagion (the spread of cultural fads and the viral diffusion of information) depends upon the structure of the social network and on the dynamics of human behaviour. Although the models are simple enough to allow for mathematical analysis, I will show examples where they can also provide good matches to empirical observations of cascades on social networks.

PhD position at the University of Leicester

The University of Leicester invites applications for a fully funded 3.5-year PhD studentship to work on the project “Structural optimization applied to space missions” under the supervision of Dr Alberto Paganini and Prof Emmanuil Georgoulis.

This project lies at the interface of numerical analysis and scientific computing. The project focuses on new discretization approaches to structural optimization and their application to satellite design.

Come along to the Online IMA Early Career Mathematicians’ Autumn Conference on 24-25 October 2020. This event is free to attend and will be held via Zoom.

What is the conference about?

The conference will interest mathematicians early in their career, in academia and industry, students of mathematical sciences, as well as those with an interest in the subject. It will feature plenary talks from distinguished speakers covering a wide range of subjects, as well as activities to allow for interaction among the attendees and speakers.

This is a perfect opportunity to learn about fascinating areas of mathematics (and their applications) from people that work on them, whilst also providing you the chance to become more involved with a professional body of mathematics. There will be plenty of time to network during the conference at our Virtual Coffee Breaks, allowing you the opportunity to meet people with similar interests and find out more about the wide range of careers that are available.
