SIAM-IMA UKIE Virtual Networking Event

The SIAM-IMA Student Chapters of Strathclyde, Manchester, Cardiff, and Dublin successfully hosted a virtual networking event for PhD students on the 9th of December 2020.  The event consisted of a careers talk given jointly by Dr. Ben Tordoff and Dr. Oli Tissot from MathWorks, followed by a team table quiz with approximately 40-50 attendees from the four Universities.

The careers talk gave a brief history of MathWorks and MATLAB and described the problems that they solve and how their customers make the world a better place using the tools that they build. The presentation also gave an insight into how the skills and knowledge gained during a PhD can then be transferred and utilized in industry. If you wish to find out more about MathWorks, then we recommend consulting the blog by the cofounder of MathWorks Cleve Moler, namely Cleve’s Corner – https://blogs.mathworks.com/cleve/, or the blog Behind the Headlines – https://blogs.mathworks.com/headlines/.

The table quiz afterwards was hosted by four committee members, one from each University, and gave students a chance to meet and socialize in an informal setting.

We have all missed the ability to attend events face-to-face during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, we hope that the increase in virtual seminars, conferences and networking throughout this time will continue to facilitate collaborative events in the future.
